The Z496-1000 is the flagship rotor for the Hermle Z496-K family of high-volume refrigerated centrifuges (Z496-K Floor-Standing and Z496-K-UC Underbench). At 4 × 1,000 mL bottle capacity in a swing-out geometry with rectangular buckets — not round — this rotor unlocks the Z496-K's defining advantage over smaller bench centrifuges: it accepts microplates directly in the rectangular bucket profile, or carries dense tube populations (up to 40 × 50 mL conical or 96 × 15 mL conical per cycle) via tube-insert sets. This rotor is what makes a Z496-K a multi-purpose institutional workhorse rather than a single-format bottle centrifuge.

Compatibility & Configuration

Chassis compatibility — Z496-K family only. The Z496-1000 fits the Z496-K Floor-Standing and the Z496-K-UC Underbench variants — same instrument in two chassis heights. Not interchangeable with Z446, Z366, Z327, or smaller Hermle universal centrifuges; those instruments use different drive-spindle dimensions and speed-class limits.

Rectangular bucket geometry — the key feature. Standard 4-place swing-out rotors use round buckets (the Z446-750-AC family, for example). The Z496-1000's rectangular profile is what allows direct microplate carry (a microplate is rectangular; round buckets need a microplate adapter that wastes capacity), and what permits dense tube-insert configurations (40 × 50 mL or 96 × 15 mL per bucket) by packing tubes in a grid rather than a circle.

RFID-tagged. Like all Z-series rotors, the Z496-1000 carries an RFID tag that the chassis reads at insertion. The drive automatically applies the rotor's rated speed cap (4,200 rpm) and tunes the imbalance threshold to this rotor's load characteristics. Operator cannot accidentally over-spin or apply microcentrifuge-class imbalance thresholds to a high-inertia 4 × 1,000 mL load.

Hermetically-sealed bucket option (separate accessory line item) — for biosafety-critical workflows that require aerosol containment during high-RCF spins, Hermle offers sealed bucket variants compatible with this rotor.

Application Profile

Microplate-format work at high-volume scale. The rectangular buckets accept microplates directly without adapter waste — useful for cores that consolidate plate-based assays (ELISA wash, magnetic-bead pull-downs, microplate-format extraction) into the same instrument that handles bottle-format prep.

Dense tube populations. 40 × 50 mL conical or 96 × 15 mL conical per cycle is throughput territory that single-tube-rotor centrifuges can't approach. Vaccine production, large-volume diagnostic prep, and bulk-clinical workflows benefit directly.

Blood-bag separation in component-therapy and cryoprecipitate workflows. The rectangular geometry accepts standard blood-bag formats with the appropriate insert.

Bulk volume prep. When a workflow genuinely needs 4 × 1,000 mL bottle capacity (vaccine bulk concentration, large-scale fermentation harvest, environmental high-volume processing), this is the rotor that delivers it at this rotor's 3,964 × g ceiling.

Loading & Balance

Symmetric loading is non-negotiable. At 3,964 × g with a fully loaded rotor (4 buckets × ~1.2 kg empty bucket + ~1 kg sample × 4 = roughly 9 kg total moving mass at radius), asymmetric loading would cause severe excursion damage. The Z496-K's RFID-aware imbalance shut-off catches asymmetric loads, but operators should pre-balance bucket pairs by weight before insertion.

Microplate loading: plates must be balanced as pairs — two plates in opposite buckets balanced to within the rotor's per-bucket tolerance (per Hermle service documentation; typical tolerance is in the gram range for paired plates).

Pre-cooling. The Z496-K chassis's pre-cooling program is rotor-specific — it knows the Z496-1000's thermal mass and brings the chamber to set-point before insertion accordingly.

Ordering & Configuration

Z496-1000 ships as the rotor body with rectangular buckets. Tube inserts (50 mL conical, 15 mL conical, blood-bag, microplate adapter) and any specialty bucket variants (sealed, SafeCoat-coated) are separate accessory line items.

Use the quote request to specify: chassis being paired with (Z496-K vs Z496-K-UC), tube-insert configurations needed (which formats and how many sets), whether sealed bucket sets are required for biosafety workflows, and lead time for any custom adapter configurations.

Warranty: 5-Year Hermle warranty (3 years full + 2 years drivetrain). Includes balance validation and rotor inspection through the Hermle service network — recommended at install plus annually for high-utilization environments.

Rotor inventory note: the Z496-1000 is most facilities' default Z496-K rotor — it covers the broadest workflow range. For specialized workflows (e.g., 6 × 250 mL angle-rotor work at higher RCF), the Z496 family includes additional angle and swing-out rotors as separate SKUs. A facility running multiple workflow types typically owns the Z496-1000 plus 1–2 specialty rotors.
